My First Android: Hello World
I couldn’t wait to test drive Google’s Android. Today I did it finally with subbu , as always Google is simple and cool.
Android SDK is available, even an eclipse Plug-in is also available which makes our life much simpler. Just install the SDK + plugin and play around. The SDK comes with some samples, which will be a help a lot in kick starting.
Android API is packed with widgets, something similar to GWT, but a lot more(obviously).
There are four building blocks to an Android application:
- Activity
- Intent Receiver
- Service
- Content Provider
I went through Scobleizer, he has posted a crappy post about Android, where he has listed out the certain short comings(which he thinks so), just for the sake. He couldn’t think beyond iphone, we cannot compare both. Open Source always has one advantage, it always grows.Still a lot to go, this time, I am not gona stop with my Hello World Application. Planing to Explor(d)e.
Update: Scobleizer has repented for doing so after a good number of commenters
said that he was wrong. Its Good, that atleast he realized now
Front End Vs Middle Tier : Art Vs Skill
I have seen people who always comes to me and say, “I want to work in Middle Tier, I don’t want to be in Front end.”, they all live in one prejudice, that Only Middle Tier Developers are coll funda people and people who sit with Front end are not that talented. They see the front end developer as one cheap guy, I am involved in both front end and middle tier development, so dont think I am talking on behalf of Front End developers.
When I was out with my friend for a coffee, she was telling that she wants to code in middle tier and I asked what is the reason that she is so specific about Middle Tier, she told she has a passion towards Middle Tier – business Logic and other stuffs. She is like, how long can we sit with Front end, I really dont know why people think like this, i think this off-shoring culture has created a false notion about Front end development. To an extent, i think building a Business logic is easier than front end development.
Talking with respect to developers(Seniors/leads), I dont think there is any opportunity for them to prove their creativity, they are given the business design and they have to ride their horse inside that limit. The architecture is done by the architects, so this doesn’t need any special creativity(I am talking about creativity only, not intelligence or brilliance). They need to know the tool/language thats all, with some logical thinking, if this ingredient is present then they are done. But this is not the case with the Front end developer, he needs creativity, simple knowing the tool wont help him at any cost. And there is a lot of opportunity for him to exhibit his creativity. There is no scale for creativity, but there is a scale for SKILL. Say for example, two Java developers with same amount of exposure, expertise are EQUAL, what i mean is, given a task, a very high optimized solution from both of them will be almost same. But this is not the case with two front end development, given same skill sets, exposure and expertise, they are not the same. The factor which makes the distinction is their creativity.
“Front-end development is an Art, where as Business Development is a Skill”. Skill can be developed but Art cannot be.
Anyone can write a code for the given problem, if the right solution is provided, then no one cares. But this is not the case with Front end, you have to provide the solution and main thing in this is, everyone should like that solution. It is not easy, try and see.
I am not talking about the offshore culture in Front end development, where the FE developers are given jpegs and they are asked to design the HTML pages. I am talking about those who decide the jpegs, talking about the higher level. If it is gona be a public site, it is all the more difficult.
I am more concerned about Look & Feel, Easy accessibility, comfortableness in using Orkut than the “No dough nuts for you” error.
GMail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail, Rediffmail, all these have similar B2B stuff running behind, but what makes one better than the other is the User Interface(By User Interface, I am not talking about the Look and feel, it includes ease, comfort and everything, KISS-Keep It Short and Simple concept.) So here Business logic is not making any big difference, it is how the product interacts with the End User. Be creative, be recognized.
People think that Front end development is some sort of low profile job, but it is not so. It has equal importance in the business model. I am not saying that Front End developing is superior to Middle Tier, it is different. So guys, come out of the prejudice, Front end Development is not easy as you think.
Under Promise and Over Deliver
Recently I completed “Greatness Guide” by Robin Sharma. Unlike other motivational/self help books even by the same author, this book stands apart. I have read “Who will cry? when you die” by the same author, almost same theme, but Greatness Guide stands apart. I am not here to review the book, I just want to talk about one point, which I found very relevant to our IT industry. It is “Under Promise, Over deliver“
Here in IT, Quote, Bid, Estimate are three main things that kick starts the project. Usually what happens is, not only in IT , in any industry, companies see to that, they quote the minimum for the maximum deliverable. Quoting plays a vital role, one chance win or lose. So here people do all sorts of magic to win and once they do that, the whole enthu and vib is gone, when it comes to delivery, the promises are always not fulfilled. If we raise one question, which is, IS the Client 100% satisfied? I think mostly it would be a NO. What can we do about this, when i was thinking about this, this quote struck me. Implementing the concept of : Under Promising and Over Delivering. Read more…

Facts about MainFrame
Recently I read some facts about MainFrame, I use to have a notion that MainFrame programming is something like typing code in assembly, i thought it to be montonous. But after reading this, I am bit titled towards MainFrame. For those who think that Mainframes is a field very few opportunities(including me once), Read on u will be surprised…
1. The mainframes hold approximately ” 70 % ” of the entire data stored in this planet
