Youtube.com now working

August 30, 2008 3 comments

Youtube is not working, atleast here in India/BSNL. It shows up an error page.

You tried to access the address http://www.youtube.com/, which is currently unavailable

But this problem is only with youtube.com and in.youtube.com, if i try uk.youtube.com or anyother country’s youtube, it works perfectly fine for me. What could be the reason?

How often they update wiki and google maps?

May 29, 2008 3 comments

How often do you thing the satellite images of our earth which are provided by Google and Wiki Mapia are updated? If you say every 15 days, then you have to brush up a lot.

Recently i noticed this when i was browsing thru wikimapia, i was looking for kathipara flyover. First phase of construction got over some 2 months back and the current map shows a appox. 5 months old snap. Does this happen only for Indian Maps? or it is the same throughout the world?

My First Android: Hello World

November 13, 2007 3 comments

b-factor_logo_android.gifI couldn’t wait to test drive Google’s Android. Today I did it finally with subbu , as always Google is simple and cool.

Android SDK is available, even an eclipse Plug-in is also available which makes our life much simpler. Just install the SDK + plugin and play around. The SDK comes with some samples, which will be a help a lot in kick starting.

Android API is packed with widgets, something similar to GWT, but a lot more(obviously).

There are four building blocks to an Android application:

  • Activity
  • Intent Receiver
  • Service
  • Content Provider

I went through Scobleizer,  he has posted a crappy post about Android, where he has listed out the certain short comings(which he thinks so), just for the sake. He couldn’t think beyond iphone, we cannot compare both. Open Source always has one advantage, it always grows.Still a lot to go, this time, I am not gona stop with my Hello World Application. Planing to Explor(d)e.   :)

Update: Scobleizer has repented for doing so after a good number of commenters
said that he was wrong. Its Good, that atleast he realized now ;)

Yahoo Pipes Vs Google Mashup Editor

September 28, 2007 2 comments

Finally I made time to try both Yahoo Pipes and Google Mashup Editor(GME). Both the things are cool in their own way, but Yahoo Pipes are for Laymen, anyone who are familiar with feeds(atleast if they know how to use that), they can easily work with Pipes, but this is not the case for GME, one should know XML to build mashups. So from a programmer’s perspective, GME sounds better, but Pipes had made it easy go. And Yahoo Pipes is a hit when compared to GME, because of its GUI, which has a higher reachability level.

So many tutorials are out there in the net for this, infact both of these services have their own tutorial, yahoo here again comes up with a video tutorial, which is good enough to get started.

Pipes has some limitations, you cant think out of the box, you are allowed to play around only with pre-defined options, as GME is code based, you dont have this limitation, which makes GME more flexible. May be some IDE will help  GME more successful. We have Microsoft Popfly another equivalent, but its still in alpha, lets wait and see what’s Microsoft answer for these.

Google Local Search : ini namma Google

July 23, 2007 Leave a comment

Google local search is really a kool tool from Google, unlike normal Google Search, this has two text boxes, one for type (What) and one for location(Where). Depending on your queries the results are generated.
For eg
What – Coffee ; Where – Chennai

The results are
Any Time (grt Grand)
120, Sri Thyagaraya Road, Inside G R T Grand, T Nagar, Chennai – 044 28150778
“Dont stay here…. Though the hotel was somewhat pleasing…the staff, the food, the service was substandard. …” 12 reviews
Website

Match Point (taj Coromandel)
37, M G Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai – 044 66002827

Devi Kala Cinema Hall
Anna Salai, Mount Road, Chennai – 044 28550066

The Right Place (the Residency)
49, Gn Chetty Road, T Nagar, Chennai – 044 28250085
Website

Cafe Expresso (hotel Shelter)
19, 20 & 21, Venkatesa Agraharam Street, Mylapore, Chennai – 044 24951919
“Great value for the money I booked this hotel through travelguru, as Shelter’s website doesn’t seem to work.
Website

This is pretty interesting right? It is always very difficult to remember local websites and sometimes when we google for the site for our local flower shop it wont be of much help. Now it will be very easy.

This happens to be my 400th Post :)

She Invented – No He invented – Is google Male Chauvinistic?

May 7, 2007 1 comment

Where does chauvinism comes in Search Engines??? Dont get puzzled. If you search “She invented” in Google, it is suggesting “he invented “. Where it the problem? Why Google renders so? This case is not same in Yahoo, for this search term , Yahoo is providing proper results. What happened to our GOOGLE ? Lets Google it.

Not only for this, While Googling, I found out this is the same case with

  • She  Discovered
  • She entered

Lets keep Googling
