What is Happening with IT
Software Industry is in boom,In India everyone is running behind, hunting a Job in IT.But people dont know how bad it is to be in. Is that really bad, to be frank it is, everyone is attracted towards it’s fantasy,luxury and fame, but at what cost? No one is measuring what they are losing. Actually we are losing a lot. I am not here to mention about the losses and it’s effects. I am here to talk about the causes. Who is the reason behind it? Actually no one to blame, everyone is running a mad race, they dont know why they are running, but they are running; they dont for what they are running, but they are running. Infosys was started way before Microsoft, but what is the status now? Now, comeon dont blame the country,dont blame the politics. It is the Company and its culture which is making all the differences. Inidan IT companies are working hard, I agree but not working Smart. Yeah, I agree Clients are more important to Us, but more than that Employees are more important. This Time Difference is creating another Mess, I dont know who started this but just because it was started, it is still under practise. No concern is an exception to this. Consider this, suppose you are getting Microsoft WIndows and you encounter some technical problem, so you are mailing them regarding that, you will get the reply only the during their working hours(i.e your night time). Who is the Client here, we..but are they waiting for us? NO. Then why we are doing that. We are paid for our skill our brains but then why are we treated like slaves.If they have a clarification, they should wait for us, but the case is Vice versa. The reason for Staying Late is Client CALL, damm it.
I have a friend, he is working in a reputed IT concern, his office timings are 9 to 6. But he is wokring in a different shceudle. 11 to 11, just because he have to keep reporting his client daily, he is stayin up late, he is married and he is having kid, he says his doesnt even get time to see his face, thats so true. I dont know, no wife is protesting against this. Somewhere someone started this stupid culture and everyone is following it. I dont know why people are accepting it,.
Once Narayanamoorthy Commented on people who are staying late for nothing. He pointed out so many bad effects of that, I dont know, where all those bad effects went, if a employee is staying for a Client call. I bet, those effects will cost you more than losing the client. The reason is we are used to it, Tom is doing that, because Dick is doing that, Dick is doing that because hary is doing that and why hary is doing that, because Tom is doing that. we oursleves got trapped into this net, we cant come out, unless everone changes.
A project is on Bid, the actually estimate for the project is say 6 months with 30 developers, Company A will start the bid quoting 5 months and 28 Developers, as far as A is concerned, he can make it, because it is not far beyond, seeing A, company B will quote for 4 months and 25 Developers, as far as B is concerned, B’s quote is not far beyond A. Like this it grows and believe me it will end in a month and 5 developers working 24×7. Now who is the winner?? The Client, ofcourse the company would have won the bid, but it lost to itself, because in normal case, the same compnay would have won this with 6 months period, now it is losing 5 months and those 10 people will be paid 20% extra, which is again a loss to him, if he had worked on the project for 6 months. the loss is more thatn 500%. But he is not realising that. Think again if you are staying late in the office regularly. Think again about your family. Think again about your social life and health. In most of the cases there is no compensation and in most the compensation is not worth. Everyhour counts, everyman hour is paid, when someone else is betting over your hour, why cant you do that. One of my friend is into a new Project, for the past 6 months he has been working on saturdays and sundays. They have been told that they will be given compenstaion, I dont believe it, am so sure that, after this project, the next project will peep in, that time, ofcourse they wont give all these 30 days, he cant take, if he takes he cant be in the project. This is atleast ok, some people are there, they wont even avail the available leave, they pile it up and they know that they can never use it. Finally they land up in getting the silly pay for those days. But Time is no money…
If someone leaves the office on time, everyone around will see him as if he is doing a crime and people who stay late think that they are smart people and they are working a lot. Listen, staying late is not the best way to impress the boss, it may work but it will affect you , you might not realise now, but later you will. There is something called “Art of Saying NO” Learn that. Even companied should change its culture,how many of us know there is something called NASSCOM, most of us dont, but we know all Social Networking Sites. Guys’Girls act SMART, think SMART, work SMART.
So guys/girls think over it. Dont be so blind, dont just see money. You wont get these time back. Work…Work Smart.

One reason is, already so many people have told about that and one more the main reason is i want to concentrate on this late nite culture. I wanted to talk about Company’s culture so i didnt concentrated on individual’s culture.
Thats true dear …. and am feeling about those guys who work even on saturdays and sundays … Even if they are willing to work with enthusiasm there body need rest and it will surely affect their health in future … Lets keep hope that they will change !!!

Many times i realized people stare me if i start by 7…. but you people have never stayed back for that reason……. that is really cool…..

I used to think that our attitude toward white man is the reason, for stretching our work-times for client calls. But I came to realize that we are a service oriented country and that’s the way we are.
I had been on the other side of the outsourcing line where I outsourced a project to a vendor. The vendor worked just like any other software company; the developer showed up over weekends to finish project etc., There is nothing about white man or black man.
I do agree with you that our youngsters have no concept of fun outside of work. This worries me. I worked with a developer who felt very sad when the organization announced 5 day weeks for 2 and and 4th week every month. He had nothing to do on a Saturday. At some point all the consulting companies encouraged these people to virtually live in office without realizing the negative effects of it. We all will come out of it.
As far as comparing Microsoft and Infy, I do not think Infy is a loser. Infy had created a good amount of wealth for its employees just like MS. Infy didn’t get into lawsuits over monopolistic business practices. Infy’s product called Service will be a popular product for generations. Infy chose a market where innovation means better processes, better people, better quality. MS chose a market where innovation means tangible products.

Bala, you kow I am fan of India. But I feel Shridhar is right – India is a service oriented coutry. It is a very valuable natinal quality, because you obviously like to give, to be generous.
On the other hand it becomes a problem when privat comfort is requered. In the West there is much respect for the public good and the health and comfort of population is also considered to be a public good – at least in Europe, not sure about US. I guess it has a long tradition.
But you, Idnians had Ghandiji! – a great example to act if you see a problem!
